Musselburgh RFC is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the death of Derek Paterson.

Derek’s contribution to the club over more than a decade has been immeasurable as a player, member, supporter and a sponsor. His affiliation with the club was lifelong and through strong family links going back generations.
Through Derek’s support, Musselburgh RFC has flourished over the last decade and simply would not be the club it is today without him. Derek was proudly recognised by the club in 2022 with the title of Honorary President.
Derek was a committed and passionate supporter of grass roots rugby and his support goes far beyond Musselburgh RFC. He consistently placed importance on Musselburgh RFC’s values of integrity, respect and inclusion and only recently commented on his delight in seeing the club’s flourishing mini, youth and women & girls’ sections.
Derek was a generous supporter of rugby and charity, both through the time he committed and financial support he provided to numerous organisations. His generosity, passion and good humour stood Derek out from the crowd; he turned every occasion into a celebration. The club and Derek’s friends and family have received messages of support from every corner of the rugby world in Scotland, evidencing the extent of his popularity.
Derek will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him and especially by all of his many friends at Musselburgh RFC. Although we are devasted at his loss, we are immensely proud and grateful for all that he has done and all that he has achieved. He leaves behind a huge legacy and many many happy memories.
Our thoughts are with Derek’s family, in particular his mother Janie, brother Kenny, wife Tara and children Scott and Hanah.
Derek’s funeral is on Friday 7 August at 12 noon at Mortonhall Crematorium, followed by a reception at the Prestonfield Hotel.
