MRFC is saddened to report the death in Cumbria of former club captain George Paterson. George captained the club from 1967-1969.
George was a tough, ferocious and lightning-fast hooker who was unfortunate to miss out on a Scotland cap in the 1960s. George had been selected for the Scotland team but during the Friday afternoon run around before the match he burst a blood vessel in his leg and therefore could not play on the Saturday. Unfortunately, despite being someone all other hookers dreaded playing against he was never selected again.
Our former captain and ex international referee Ray Megson once described George as a kenspeckled figure and a good bloke – this probably sums him up.
George moved on to play for London Scottish and then went on to coach at schoolboy level.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends.
