Remembering George Innes

It is with the greatest of sadness that we report the passing of Musselburgh RFC past player, president and life member, George Innes.  George passed away peacefully on the evening of Sunday 14 September surrounded by his family.

Until his passing, George was Musselburgh RFC’s earliest living president; number 12 out of a total of 33 in the history of the club, serving from 1980-1982. George was loved and respected by all at the club and far beyond, especially in the border towns where he was well known through both his rugby and Honest Toun Association connections. George’s association with Musselburgh RFC spans a lifetime and he held many roles at the club over this time. As treasurer at the time, it was George who provided a guarantee against the loan taken out to build the clubhouse at Stoneyhill.

Despite being poorly, George was the first to wear the club’s newly created president’s pin and was fondly remembered at the recent past president’s ceremony at the club just a few days ago. Although in hospital, George insisted that he wore his club tie as he became the first ever to wear the president’s pin.

"George was articulate and knowledgeable; he was great company and had a memory that could rival anyone" comments President Blair Stewart. "We think George’s influence on the club, and on that of the wider town is on a par with stalwarts such as Ramsay Smith and Bill Caird. His passing is a huge loss for Musselburgh RFC and for the town. However, his legacy will live large and we will always remember him. RIP and very well played #12"

Funeral details will be shared in due course.

“Ok, maybe just a wee one”
