Musselburgh Colts lined up against North Berwick Colts on a heavy pitch that had just been thoroughly ploughed by the North Berwick and Preston Lodge 2nd XVs. Both Musselburgh and North Berwick were keyed up for the game and no quarter was going to be given. North Berwick played with the slope in their favour for the first half and applied the early pressure. Musselburgh’s defence creaked but was not breached. On a breakout from their half Musselburgh were awarded a penalty just to the right of the North Berwick posts. The three points were taken. Musselburgh took the lead 3 points to nil. North Berwick did not lie down and were immediately back on the attack. North Berwick won a set piece inside the Musselburgh half. The ball came out on the North Berwick side and a clever dummy completely fooled the Musselburgh defence. Musselburgh tried to get back but couldn’t stop North Berwick dotting down. The conversion was missable but the kicker made no mistake. North Berwick extended their lead by making no mistake with a penalty they were awarded. No more scores in the first half.

The second half saw Musselburgh looking to exploit the slope of the pitch by kicking down into the corner. There were periods of sustained pressure on the North Berwick line but as with Musselburgh in the first half the North Berwick defence creaked but was not breached. Finally the pressure paid off and Musselburgh went over in the corner. Conversions from the touchline are never easy but the kicker kept his cool to level the scores. Another period of uncompromising play saw each team awarded a penalty to see the score stand at 13 all. With over ten minutes to go Musselburgh were awarded a free kick. Some quick thinking saw the tap taken and then the ball was floated over the posts for a drop goal. Musselburgh had once more edged into the lead. North Berwick were desperate to win on home soil and stuck to the task but just could not find a way through.
This was an excellent performance by the Colts who once again stepped up to the mark and showed that they have a great attitude and team spirit. All players put in a great shift to close out a very physical match contested by two evenly matched teams.
