Perthshire Colts narrowly defeated by Musselburgh Colts - Posted By: Tim Wheadon
The first competitive match of 2010 for the Musselburgh Colts saw them get back to winning ways, albeit narrowly.
Perthshire Colts arrived at Pinkie looking to progress to the quarter finals of the National U18 Cup at the expanse of Musselburgh. Musselburgh, though, had other ideas. The game kicked off in cold drizzly conditions but at least there was no wind to speak of. Most of the match was played between the two 22 yard lines with neither team really threatening the opposition try line. After ten minutes Musselburgh were awarded a penalty just outside the 22. The angle wasn’t great and so the points were duly taken. Musselburgh were 3 points to the good. Ten minutes later it was Musselburgh who infringed and Perthshire were awarded a penalty. Scores now tied at 3 all. A chance for Musselburgh to go three points clear was lost when a penalty out wide was missed. Just before half time Perthshire finally managed to make some pressure pay and a forwards try was scored. The resulting conversion was missed.

The second half was very much like the first with only the odd break into either team’s 22. Into the last quarter and Perthshire started to rotate their squad. On one of the rare breaks into the Perthshire 22 Musselburgh thought that they had scored but were brought back for a foot in touch. The resulting phase of play did indeed bring the desired try. Scores now all square at 8 all with the conversion still to come. The conversion was cleanly struck so Musselburgh entered the last five minutes with a slender two point lead. Perthshire were determined not to give up without a fight as they tried to find the winning score but Musselburgh held out until the final whistle. The Perthshire squad battled hard in this match but they were only just kept at bay by the Musselburgh XV.
Final score: Musselburgh Colts 10 - Perthshire Colts 8.
